They make DC UPSs for industrial/controls use (DC in, DC out), but they’ll be be much more expensive than consumer-grade products. It would probably be best to use a standard UPS and a DC power supply. [DC and this doesn’t include the battery module.

Yes im sure that barn would have been converted by now.

The barns were not only used for just storing hay, some barns had more uses. Milking the cows, Clipping sheep. A barn would have had many uses but yes as Dan says storing hay would have been high on the list.

Imagine the sheer effort to cart back hay to the farm. No tractor then.
The horse would have eaten as much hay as you would have produced to just cart it back to the farmhouse.

There was simply no need for a large door or windows.
enough for a bit of light and just to allow the air to circulate i suppose.

Im guessing the reason that this barn hasnt been converted is the sheer cost of getting electrictiy to it.
Gerry here in the UK it would cost something in the region of $25,000 dollars to just get power across a couple of fields to the barn.
Putting in a mains supply would be very expensive.
Uphills farmhouse and barn would have had this problem at sometime in its past.

I cant place were it is
Uphill has a knack of taking pictures that I should recognise but cant think of there whereabouts.

The barn should be left as it is

I was able to get mine working using a JLD612. I ending up setting it to have the internal relay as the PID controlled output. I have the internal relay hook up to a 12V DC power supply which is connected to the control side of the external relay Scott uses in his build. I have the heaters controlled by the external relay. So the internal relay clicks on which sends the 12V signal to the external relay which clicks the heaters on. It’s a little bit of a convoluted set-up but I was worried about burning out the internal relay. Also it gives me a 12V source which I will use to power a motor with propeller when the pump burns out.

100km/day’s pretty doable. I took my first tour for a couple of decades last year — Cornwall to Santiago de Compostella — averaging a bit over that. This year, Nice-Greece via the Balkans: with detours, about 2500km in about a month (too hot to cycle in the afternoons, but plenty of sea to bathe in). What are you planning for accommodation? (I was wild camping all the way. Fellow shoestring travellers I met on the way had great experiences with couchsurfers.org; they also praised the generosity of Germans in allowing them to camp on their land and even offering breakfast.) If you’re unsure, I suggest solo. I did a week in Spain with a friend: it was good, but we did have different paces and different ideas about where to camp, so it was also good that we didn’t do the whole trip together. You’ll likely hook up with other cyclists for a day here and there if you want to. Have fun!

Thanks – all valid suggestions

QUAD Encoders on feed motor shaft – unfortunately does not give closed-loop feedback on what the wire is actally doing. slip etc is not accounted for.

V-groove – already in the unit you are watching.

2 Idlers – not sure how that can reduce slip?

Gears always help – very true. Add cost & complexity – and reduce speed, but always worth considering to get the result.

Power supply – I originally used a small battery bank with a constant charger – but after about 20 minutes operation the voltage began to drop to the extent that the motors labored during the heavy load periods – and of course lost some feed length (aargh!) As this was a quickie solution – instead of building feedback on the wire feed length, I simply stuffed a 7.2V 20A mains supply on the job. Problem solved – but solution noted, and next iteration will have closed loop feedback on the wire drive!

Cheers & thanks

Hey, would you be willing to give me the specs on that power supply (usually printed on the outside of the big ugly lump part)?

I'm building a custom setup that already includes a 12V DC power supply, and (fingers crossed) if the Compact 4 actually runs on 12V DC it would mean I could toss the external one that comes with it and just wire it in to the existing power in my system.

I've checked SoundCraft's web site and I couldn't find the output specs of the power supply in any of their docs.

Thanks!

My friend, (who is an electrical engineer), built one last year for his senior project. His was a solid state design (using discrete components such as transistors), and used a 12V DC power supply. Got roughly a 3-5″ spark on it, and was able to play music through it (very clear too!) But I’d say you’d need a fair amount of electronics knowledge before building a completely solid state device. The original design may be easier to build, but possibly more expensive (not too sure how the original design works, but I know it doesn’t use solid state components).

jaycueaitch:

I have a beef with the tail end of your analysis:

“Furthermore these protein changes were brought about by 900MHz radio waves. Mains operates at 50 Hz (60 Hz in the US). Since the energy of a photon is proportional to its frequency, the effects of ‘electrosmog’ will be a tiny fraction of one percent of those observed by Leszczynski.”

You have not considered the fact that it is not the 50 Hz mains which generates the effect; otherwise people would be reportedly equally “ill” just being next to mains regardless of the device. It is the effect of the electronic components, generating frequencies of the MHz range, which are being considered. Their photons would be much more energetic.

I know you couldn't measure them, but I am an ex-test engineer, and I have! Their intensity outside of devices is low, because devices are fitted with EMC supression devices by law. However, if photons emanate from within these devices, they could, by the Planck relation you site, be energetic enough to cause problems for those with sensitivity, without being observable on the mains supply (because of legally required suppression to protect the mains).

I do not wish to comment on your larger contention about quasi/quack science; just to ask to to reflect this possibility in your analysis.

Cheers

On the power supply:I built something very similar to run my ham radio stuff.I found a similar case, but mine was painted navy gray and originally held explosive bolts (very cool stenciling)I was only aiming for a reliable 5-6 amps output at 12 volts since it was only intended to run my 2 meter handheld and maybe a light source, so I used a 7ah sla battery and an 8 amp digital power supply to make what I called an “uninturuptable DC power supply”.Very basic, it uses a relay for switching and a fully automatic charger to maintain the battery.I don't like how meters can get messed up with rough handling, so I used some basic colored LEDs as indicators for power.I should take some photos of mine to share since it's so similar.Bummer I finished it just in time to stop being so active in ham radio. 73 de n2nlq!

Stephan,

Sorry for the late reply. I've been out of the country.

'Wild camping' basically involves pitching the tent in a non-discrete place by setting up camp after sundown and breaking down camp really early in the morning before daybreak. Another option would be to sleep out in the open without a tent – I've done that about a dozen times and it works well as long as it doesn't rain and the mosquitoes aren't too bad.

As far as multi-day hikes go near Fuji, I'd recommend doing the Mizugaki-Kinpu-Kobushi traverse (you can search for it on this blog) or the Tsurugi traverse on Shikoku island (or Ishizuchi for that matter).

It's still too early to do any trekking in the Alps with all of the snow. You're more that welcome to check out my other blog (japanhike.wordpress.com) for other ideas.

Truth Ryan.In this part: “I tell you, let the days of becoming weary in well-doing end for I have called you to walk in the Spirit and not according to the flesh.” We, by faith, do Gods' will. We by the spirit take hold of the sensual-emontional man and die to ourselves, that we can walk in the spirit. We don't allow verbal battery to alarm us. We don't give railing for railing. We simply die to emotion and not fulfill the lust of the flesh. The emotions of man block our hearing of the Spirit or override wisdom, thereby giving place to sin.L,J,P&HGDave

Wow, good to see a little dialogue on these issues, even if some of us need to study up on the basic properties of natural law. You know, like physics. It's much easier to attack WTC7, as it was not hit by a plane, and didn't suffer significant structural damage from the debris hit it took. I choose to take issue on the main two buildings. I would urge Mr. Phillies to pass these questions and thoughts to his expert friend. I would love to hear the answers and rebuttal.

1. The jet fuel explosions, generating the maximum heat for this event, approx. 1800-2300 degrees, was not nearly enough to melt the steel. They lasted mere seconds. This could not have significantly weakened the nearest columns, and there were 42 huge ones. You'll find the specs in the links above. Try Dr. Jones' “How Indeed…”. How then could it have weakened the lower floors?
2.Even if it had been hot enough and burned at these temperatures long enough, it would not have had the time to transfer much of that heat very far down these massive columns. How could it possibly have weakened them to the degree that they would shatter like glass into neat little lengths which fell at free-fall speed.
3. What happened to the concrete between the floors? That was the majority of the dust cloud you saw, as the buildings fell. Did the weight of the upper floors pulverize it into fine dust and blow it [...]

Sorry, but I generally don't approve of promoting the fear of electricity, and I think readers and visitors of HaD should be smart enough to know their way around it – or leave it be. I got a lot of people into tinkering with electronics by now, all of which were turned off before because everybody told them “don't!”. True, SMPS are high-class electronics, but while it is wise to discuss the facts and hazards, it is not to talk about how many times something can potentially kill you in how many ways all over again, as all speculations depend on standard environment conditions which are almost never met.

Ignoring that, it might be a good move to consult Sam Goldwassers page for background information before repair, it becomes very useful as soon as the culprit is not the typical output cap – or if you are designing your own smps.

Also, you should discharge ALL parts of the device before doing any work on it as wide-range supplies use a mains voltage doubler for 110V to achieve independence of supply voltage, charging up a BIG cap to about 300V – so keep all unneeded fingers in your pockets, and think first, then measure ;-) Neither a circuit breaker nor any RCD will protect you from stored electrical charge in capacitors!
